I generally try to stay away from making controversial posts on Facebook, preferring to use it as a way to stay in touch with family and friends and to share my latest cupcake creations. :) However, as a person who identifies herself as a conservative Christian, Ive been appalled over the past two days by posts from other conservatives or Christians regarding the death of Robin Williams. First, its WAY to soon to do anything but show compassion for a man who was clearly a tormented soul and for his devastated family. Now is certainly not the time to pass judgement on why he committed suicide or as to whether or not suicide is a choice. At this point, its cruel and heartless to make these kinds of public statements. Would these pundits make these statements in person to Williams loved ones? If not, they should refrain from commenting publicly. If so, then God have mercy on them. Secondly, anyone who has ever known anyone suffering from depression knows that it is very real and complicated struggle. Its not something you can just talk yourself out of or pray away. I have many dear Christian friends who struggle with depression, and believe me...if they could pray it away, they would. You cant just say, Well, if you had a different worldview, you wouldnt be depressed. There is no simple solution! If there is anything positive to come out of Williams death, perhaps it will be a broader understanding of depression. Finally, its not even our place to judge or to condemn. God, in his infinite wisdom, will make those kinds of decisions. I would speculate that he grieves more than anyone to see one of his children suffering to such a degree. And Im going to speculate that Jesus would be comforting the grieved rather than throwing stones. Rather than condemning, I think we all need to use this opportunity to become more aware of what those around us are experiencing and to show Gods love and compassion. Please know that these pundits do not represent my views as a conservative nor as a Christian. In my view, our job is to love one another.
