I get amused whenever I hear or read that a public officer or, for that matter, political appointee has helped himself or herself. Yet, I have heard and read the phrase, “helped himself/herself” so often. Indeed, friends and close associates of public officers or poltical appointees have seemed to find usage of the phrase so fanciful that they employ it with vigour and as a matter of pride. The ingenious among the friends and associates would even say, “He/she has reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllly made it”, ostensibly to rub it in. Others would also deviate a little by saying, “Mennnnnnnnn!!! Our friend has arrived o”. But the friends and associates seem far less in tune with the situation “on ground” (to use another popular phrase, wrongly used, anyway, by those who bandy it on radio and television). For no sooner would their friend who has helped himself/herself settled down to enjoy the windfall than he/she begins to seek another way to helping himself/herself all over again in tune with the reality that no “enjoyment” lasts longer in a Russian roulette economy that prevails in these shores but which many surprisingly are either yet to fully understand or just choose to diregard. To “help” self, “make it” and “arrive” can happen almost effortlessly ONLY in one government. But the EXTREMELY lucky or EXTREMELY desperate can repeat them in another government; although at a huge cost to their personal well-being. Evidence abounds to support this fact! In all this, ONLY one solution can stand the test of time: share the commonwealth to near perfection so that the mad race for luck and desperation coursing through our land today will abate resoundingly. Any other solution would only bring the “lucky” and “desperate” among us to grief in the short time; except, of course, those who proffer the “other” solution would gladly accept that sectoral development is the same as integrated development.
