I get so frustrated with ignorance, especially when it comes to the Middle East. But commentators on public radio stations who call themselves Christian really need some education. I recently felt compelled to send a note to one popular show. Perhaps the title Middle Eastern Food Festival confuses you. Saint George Melkite Catholic Church is a community of Christian Middle Easterners (and others) who are descendent of the Christians of Antioch, spoken of in the Acts of the Apostles. Our community is a peace loving one,living as best we could the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. People forget that Christianity began in the Middle East, specifically Jerusalem, Antioch, (Rome), Alexandria Egypt, and Constantinople which is Istanbul, Turkey of today. It is indeed disheartening to know that a substantial number of people in the Bible Belt have no clue who Middle Eastern Christians are, much less about the historical churches who were the founders and developers of Christianity. Saul or Paul of Tarsus, a Jew of what is Turkey today, is one example of ancients who taught the theological foundations of Christianity. And it was the ancient church who gathered, compiled and put together the chosen books for our Gospel/Old and New. Our descendents played an important role in spreading the Good News. So have no fear, we Middle Eastern Christians/Eastern Catholics are not violent, nor are we Jewish haters. We are in fact very Biblical in our liturgical life within the Church. If you know your Bible youd recognize all Biblical symbolisms, stories, etc within our Church, whether its our altar and knave and its beautiful icons or our prayer life (of which most prayers comes from the Bible). Please be open minded and come visit us. This year I am not asking you to publicize our event. I am asking you to take a church tour, meet our kind people and see us as we do our required good works.
