I get that some people will be happy that Of Mice and Men has been axed from the GCSE English curriculum, and thats fine. Personally I just think its a massive shame because of two reasons. One, its a great book. Two, the reasons for banning it were so incredibly dumb. Here is a quote from the article. Paul Dodd, the head of A-level and GCSE reform at exam board OCR, said: [Steinbecks] Of Mice and Men, which Michael Gove really dislikes, will not be included. It was studied by 90 per cent of teenagers taking English literature GCSE in the past. Which Michael Gove really dislikes... Really? I dont particularly like the Nazis, but thats not going to stop them being taught about is it? Of Mice and Men was one of the few books I actually enjoyed studying, not only was it a great work of literature, but it was a really emotional story about friendship and loyalty. I look forward to seeing whatever they choose to replace this. They did recently announce that Dizzee Rascal lyrics will be used in the English Language curriculum...so Im not expecting it to be great. Go read Of Mice and Men by the way. Also, watch the movie with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich, its fantastic.
