I glanced out the window as we were taking off and realized the wheels were lifting up off Texas soil and quite to my surprise, out of nowhere, I. Just. Completely. Lost. It. Like, instant waterworks, muffled sobs, shoulders heaving, woman beside me made nervous, lost it. Contrary to probable public perception, Im not much of a crier. And I sincerely hate crying in public (except for, apparently, during speeches in front of large groups or national audiences, for some masochistic reason). J.D. Angle, seeing that I was having a hard time regaining my composure, knew, as usual, what to do, even if I didnt. He reached over across the aisle (our ongoing 20-year compromise for two confirmed aisle, not window, and never middle seat guys), rubbed my shoulder and said: You chose the right path. If you chose the other one, youd be in call-time again this morning (for a State Senate race) trying to raise yet another $45k for the 300th day in a row and speaking to the Colleyville Democratic Club tonight for the 7th time. As he designed, I instantly stopped sobbing and started laughing. He, of course, was right. But then he added, The path you chose may actually be the harder one. But you chose the right one. And Im very proud of you. Yeah, I started crying again.
