I got a call today from someone who got the fake FBI virus. When you boot your computer, a screen comes up with an FBI warning and a number to call with no access to Windows. Usually, this actually a fairly easy one to remove. But instead of calling me, they called the FBI number on the screen. I bet you can’t guess what accent was on the other end! The Support person got them past the warning screen and then asked them to download a utility to give them access (they did) and then proceeded to point out all the issues with the computer. They then asked for money to remove the virus. NOW they call me. After warning them the system will need to be wiped. I brought the system home and after a few minutes of testing discovered that they tech from India didnt just install a virus, but infected the BIOS. It will only boot the HD in the system but crashes any other boot attempt. This is NOT removable. At minimum, a motherboard replacement is needed. Needless to say, this guy is now buying a new computer.
