I got a really homophobic tweet...it didnt really bother me but it was intended to cut to the white meat as we say in black talk... the person said Damn @KosherSoul From Soul Food to So What? So massa has thrown out the pot liquor and our manhood? WTF? Then it dawned on me. Randall Kenan and Sandor Katz and Paul Fehribach and John Martin Taylor and Ben Mims and Damon Lee Fowler and so many other culinarians share with me a very distinct cooking gene that has been there since time began. So many of my friends in living history and cultural criticism and the arts are LGBTQ and we are the storytellers, griots, photographers, record keepers, preservationists, archivists and artists who tell these stories. Its the conversations Ive had in real time and online with many of my gay brothers like Adam Tenney and Theo Friction Practice and Colin Buckley and Jerome Glassman and the people who have known me..the Ryan F Patterson Starnard Dandridge Ruben Bermudez VerLon Murkey Warren Wills crowd that knew me at 18 and the Delroy Cornick and Lyle Ehrke s who share my passion for the music and dance culture we created in DC on James David Graham and many others dance floors...that comment made me reflect less on one persons foolishness but more on how incredibly lucky Ive been to not endure the isolation to which our ancestors were once sentenced. After the Southern Foodways Alliance I realized how lucky I was to have dinner with Sandor and Fesser Kenan. I realized how great it was to meet Paul and to hang out with Ben. I realized how much more meaningful the first Southern Discomfort Tour was with Johnathan Lewis there to document it and I realized that unlike the people of the past I have been blessed with an Over ground Railroad with many gay conductors, and its sort of comical that some fool on Twitter thinks they are calling me out, when I already am....22 years and counting... Heres to being Roots Fabulous :)
