I got an email invitation from the conservative Federalist Society (lawyers organization) to attend a debate featuring speaker Travis Brown. It came with this blurb: The Federalist Society invites you and your colleagues in the Kansas City legal and business community to attend a presentation and panel debate in which we will test the thesis of noted political consultant Travis Brown: tax policy is a driver of economic competition between states and cities. Brown calls for eliminating state and local taxes to drive growth. We have been faced with a border war here in western Missouri where both Missouri and Kansas try to outdo each other to steal each others businesses. Taxes have been drastically lowered in Kansas and Missouri wants to follow suit. So lets follow the theory out to its logical conclusion. Brown advocates eliminated state and local taxes to drive growth. O.K., growth is a good thing as a general proposition. But if a business comes to Kansas and pays no taxes and pays minimum wage, grudgingly, and with Kansas being a Right to Work state so-called, then unions have no power, and the states citizens may get some new jobs but will they be good jobs? So if the new company in Kansas doesnt pay any taxes, doesnt provide well paying jobs, and doesnt really contribute to the community, then who really benefits from the growth? What is the point of seeking this type of growth?
