I got my Jim Hayes book today. Is is absolutely beautiful--the production, the photos of Jim, and because the contributors were students of the Hayes School of News Writing, the entries are eloquent, often very funny, accurate, and, of course, impeccably spelled. I have to admit, though, WAY more than even my little contribution, this is by far my favorite page, partly because forty years later, its still so familiar, but also because it shows the kind of teacher he was, how much he cared about his students, and how hard he worked--harder than a boatload of Puritans, if you added two boatloads of human warmth. On the slim chance that I get my wings someday, heres who I want to see first: Mom, Lincoln, and Jim. Everybody else, take a number.
