I got my results Friday afternoon from my tests I had done a couple of weeks ago at the MS Center. NYC kept my mind off of it! These are the results, and I swear its spot on for me: If u take all people with MS, 50% have cognitive issues, with 40% having moderate issues and 10% with severe. Im in the 40%. They compare it to Alzheimers as your brain has files of all your memories and knowledge, etc. With Alzheimers its as if someone comes and steals files from your filing cabinet and that part of your memory or knowledge is gone. With mine, the doctor says its like someone comes and takes all of my files and just dumps them all over the desk and when it comes time for me to know something, I cant find the damn file is how he put it. Its there somewhere but it takes awhile to recall things sometimes. BUT he did say my intelligence is close to superior (yes! I knew it!!), but the part of my brain that helps me speak what Im trying to say or recall information and speak it is only in the 3rd or 4th percentile. I will not do well anymore speaking in front of a crowd (which, how well did I really do as PTO president awhile back? Although Im doing pretty well at news stories these days!!) The good news is he says its not a hardware problem, but a software problem and most of my cognitive issues are coming from extreme fatigue caused by the MS & a small part comes from lesions in the brain at the brainstem. Unfortunately the only treatment for this is Provigil or Nuvigil, which I already take. The dr is following up the results with Dr. English, my neuro, and he will let me know what to do from this info.
