I got my visual memory about Finland from Kamome Diner which is a Japanese film of young director Naoko Ogigami to be shot entirely in Finland. The story revolves around a Japanese diner located in a street corner of Helsinki. Although nothing special happened in the diner, through subtle interactions and ordinary day to day activities everyone in the end of the story had undergone changes in their lives for the better. The plot of this movie is a little bit loose and unrealistic, but the delightful Finland seaside view really makes me happy. I know from the movie that famous for its midnight sun, Helsinki is “a seaport in which seagulls fly and passenger liners come and go”. I can imagine what a delight view it is. With a sense of humor, Kamome Diner is a movie about faith and hope, telling me no matter what I am going through smiling and living my life with a positive attitude can conquer difficulties and make things better. I believe that Naoko Ogigami set this film in Finland not only because she has much influenced by Finnish film master Aki Kaurismaaki, but also because of the life style and atmosphere in the country. I can imagine that people there are relaxed and diligent, nice and humorous, doing what they want with faith, and enjoying every moment of their life with love.
