I got pulled over this morning by a state trooper. I pulled over - TopicsExpress

I got pulled over this morning by a state trooper. I pulled over immediately, parked, turned off the ignition and waited. He sauntered up and told me that I had a tail light out and that he was just letting me know about it. He never asked for my license and never called for backup. I told him Id run up to the auto parts store and get a bulb. He said, That sounds like a plan. and we parted ways. While waiting in line to purchase a $2 bulb, I began to think. At no point during that incident did I ever worry that I was going to be arrested. Nor did I worry that any physical harm would come to me. I felt apprehension at the sight of blue lights but that evaporated once he explained why he pulled me over. And I certainly was not in fear for my life. Im not sure why this struck such a chord with me, but it did. Ive realized it before but never with such clarity. In light of recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, its become all too clear for some, that, regardless whether we want to admit it or not, there is a lot of work to do before a dream from long ago is realized. We still do not live in an age where a man is judged on the content of his character but still on the color of his skin. We, instead, live in a world where an unarmed teenager was shot in the street by a policeman and theres been no official word as to why that level of force was necessary. Theres been supposition and speculation and guessing but no explanation. And the speculation is spiraling out of control. Michael Brown has an arrest record as long as your arm. He was on PCP. He beat up the officer. He stole some cigars. He smoked weed. None of those supposed offenses are deemed worthy of a summary execution. Now, the next time I hear a pundit or news anchor use the phrase Race Card, attempt to assassinate the character of someone theyve never met, postmortem, or try to relate their experiences with police to that of the Michael Brown shooting while wearing a $3500 tailored suit to their $500k+ a year job, I will know that Im listening to the sound of one brain cell yapping. And if your concern is whether or not the officer will get a fair trial while you put the deceased on your 24 hour smear campaign, then you are a large part of the problem that youre claiming doesnt exist.
