I got the number 8. So here are some of the eight things you may not know about me. This might be fun, so I’m gonna think about it and stretch it out. Thingy#3 of 8. Unlike shopping, I like hunting. When I was very young it was things like walnuts, hickory nuts, arrowheads, Easter eggs, string and tinfoil (for the war effort). Preteens it was stamps, coins and comic books. When I was a teenager we moved into a public housing project called Summit Court in Dayton, Ohio. This was a place with rules; you had to keep both the inside and outside of your unit just like digent people did. There were even inspections. I resented this at the time, but now understand that it made me a bit more civilized. Anyway, a younger ex-military type took me under his wing and taught me the fine arts of field and stream. I’ve rarely came home empty handed from fishing and sometimes, just sometimes, had quite a stringer load. I became a member of Miami Valley Shooting Grounds, loaded my own shells (mostly from foraged used shell casings), and shot trap. I’d work my way through several boxes of shells until I could get 9 out of 10. Not Grand National material but good enough for government work. The hunt itself might end up with a couple of rabbits or quail. Or, it might just as well be a couple of pounds of mushrooms and a field mouse. I was lousy at pheasant; they’d scare the hell out of me when they came up, especially if they were under my feet. I was fairly good at quail though. It’s a wonder the dog survived, chasing after the rabbits like he did. Soon enough, I couldn’t bring myself to shoot the birds and small animals with anything other than a camera. I have no such compulsions about fish, or turtle, or frog, or shrimp, or crab. But, living in the city, the hunt often turned elsewhere, and now it’s flea markets and antique malls for pottery and paper. Thingy#4 later.
