I got this awesome little snake at Palmwoods. Its shiny black and has a red/pink underbelly, it is dangerously venomous but its not a Red Bellied Black Snake. Its a nocturnal species, growing to a maximum of 1.2 metres although usually less than 70cm and drop for drop its actually more venomous than a Red Bellied Black Snake. Would you know what it was if you came across one? Its a Small-eyed Snake. It is very secretive and unlikely to be encountered during the day. On the Sunshine Coast they are frequently spotted crossing our roads at night. According to the Australian Museum, toxicity of the venom seems to vary geographically, and the effect on humans can range from no symptoms (dry bite I would assume) to renal failure and possible death (one recorded fatality). They will only bite if provoked. A bite should always be treated as serious and medical attention sought as soon as possible. A pressure bandage should be applied ASAP. I took a few extra photos upon the release so you would have some close ups. You will notice the very small eyes. Hence the name. Save my number in your phone for if you ever need a snake catcher or for snake identification on the Sunshine Coast. Thanks Everyone!!Richie. 0409536000.
