I got to hold a baby rock lobster this morning! At the official launch of the new $16.9 million ARC Research Hub for Commercial Development of Rock Lobster Culture Systems at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) in Hobart earlier today, where I gave a speech. An exciting collaboration between UTAS and Universities in Auckland and the Sunshine Coast, local businesses JSA Consulting Engineers and Plastic Fabrications as well as one of the world’s largest operators of restaurants (and biggest consumers of lobster), Darden Inc. based in the USA. Put simply, it involves the engineering of aquaculture systems that help to cultivate rock lobster seed stock to achieve the end goal of sustainable food production - good news for the fishers, the hospitality industry, our economy and of course, for the rock lobsters!
