I grew up as a Muslim in Melbourne, Australia but was born in - TopicsExpress

I grew up as a Muslim in Melbourne, Australia but was born in Lebanon by immigrant parents who fled the harsh conditions after the Lebanese civil war. My family have always been somewhat practicing, but not enforcing any rules. When I was 10 years old I decided to put on the hijab. One day I just woke up and decided to put it on and Insha’Allah leave it on. I am now 22 years old and couldnt imagine a day going past where I could ever walk the streets without my headscarf. Hijab for me provides a sense of safety and recognition. People automatically assume Im a Muslim when they recognize the hijab, which to me is empowering. I have dealt with my fair share of racism and Islamophobia here in Australia and do have a more difficult time fitting in and finding jobs. I am a Graphic Designer by trade so our environment is very competitive as it is but I feel proud being one of the very, very few females and Muslims in my field. - Salwa (Australia) Please Share your hijab experience with us
