I grew up eating fried potatoes, pinto beans, and cornbread at every meal. Daddy fished a lot, and hunted, and we had a big garden every year, and Mama would can all she could. But I never once felt poor. Ive talked to my sisters, and they both agree. We still love that kind of food. Christmas we would get a cheap doll, underwear when we got older. Except for one year, when Daddy put a real coconut in my shoe, and I freaked out, because I thought it was a big spider. We had what we needed, and it was enough.
