I grew up in PG County Maryland for the first 13 years of my life. I lived in predominantly black neighborhoods and went to predominantly black schools until high school. I was picked on because I’m white. I was pushed around, hit, had things thrown at me because I’m white. I often stayed in class with the teacher during recess because I was afraid I would get beat up because I’m white. I wasn’t invited to birthday parties because I’m white. I had one black friend in my neighborhood. We would play together after school and on weekends. We went to the same school but she told me that she couldn’t talk to me at school – because I’m white. I would look out my bedroom window and see the girls on my street jumping rope. I wanted so badly to be out there with them. Finally, after many years of being excluded, my one black friend invited me to her birthday party. When I walked into the room everyone got quite. There was a lot of eye-rolling and lip-smacking, “What she doing here?” “Why you invite that white girl?” My friend Diane said, “She my friend and it’s my party.” By the end of the party we were all playing together. They told me that I wasn’t so bad for a white girl even though I talked funny. From that day on they let me jump rope with them. Though they still wouldn’t talk to me at school.
