I grew up on Myrtle St., not too far from the cemetery. We were always warned as kids never to play in there. There were fictional stories that some of the taller graves that had toppled had indeed toppled onto unsuspecting adolescents who had no business in the cemetery. Well, after being scared most of our childhood, my friends and I warmed to the notion of checking the cemetery out. The cemetery contains many old stones of those who passed away back in the 1800s. As a teenager I can remember coming across a wood based marker on one of the graves located on the west side of the burial ground. It seemed an odd choice of material to try and stand up to the long harsh winters of western NY. After the Oatka Festival parade this year, my gal and I ventured through the cemetery in search of this marker. Sure enough it still exists decades later. Obviously, it is an unreadable marker and it is held together with wire, but it is great that it still exists as a respectful designation of a life that once was.
