I grew up the shadow of The Cold War and as a teen, enjoyed post- apocalyptic novels like Alas Babylon so Id know how to be prepared in the event of nuclear holocaust. But its Stephen Kings novel THE STAND that comes to mind in the midst of this newest Ebola epidemic. (see linked MSN article below). In the book the virus known as Captain Trips is a type of hemorragic fever that kills 99% of the population. Ebola is a type of hemorragic fever and kills anywhere from 53-70% of infected hosts. The virus has already spread to the United States and someone has died from it with more being infected. Ebola kills by attacking your immune system first so that it cant properly signal the body on how to defend against the virus. Then the body throws everything it has at the virus which ends up thinning the blood vessels to the point where blood is leaked into surrounding tissues and this eventually leads to death. The virus can be passed through ALL body fluids including sweat and saliva. Wow, Stephen King was so prophetic back in the 70s when he wrote the book. If you havent read it, I highly recommend it. Its probably my favorite of all of Kings books.
