I grow very tired of people trashing those who are on public assistance. We pay into it hoping well never have to use it, but am grateful when its there for us to use. Like any public system, its going to get its fill of people who try to game it, defraud it, or outright steal from it. Then there are people who fall through the cracks trying to get help from it. If you feel you are one of those people who are falling between poverty and lower-middle class...could use a little of that help, but arent quite there...Im deeply sorry...for real...genuinely. I, as a progressive Democrat, who does genuinely believe in the good will these programs serve, want you to get the assistance you need. I dont want to see people struggling in these programs. They are well-intentioned with a clear purpose in mind. But dont vent frustration that you cant get benefits at the expense of others. People on welfare are not lazy or leeches or any other deplorable term that may be assigned to them. The social cost to society by letting people starve and be homeless is not acceptable and causes more problems then the money it may save by letting people fend for themselves. I find such a perspective that we as a nation would let people go hungry, let kids starve, let old people be homeless after working all their lives...just plain detestable. I will continue to fight for public assistance programs as the best solution to keep people afloat til they find work. If someone is disabled and cannot work, they deserve help from society to stay afloat. If a person has four kids and is single for whatever reason...lets make sure those kids have food and shelter. If a 70 year old woman cant work and is on Social Security...lets make sure he or she is well-fed and provided for. And I know certain someones will say get charity. But you know what...it doesnt work. IT DOES NOT WORK. There is not enough good freakin will in this nation to make it work. If were going to be jerks about welfare cause people are leeches...then why the hell would chairty work if people are going to call people moochers for accepting help from the public system? How the hell is that different? Anyway....
