I guess I must be the last one to weigh in with a post about Robin Williams. Unlike the vast majority, I was not really a fan. I did love Mork and Mindy as a kid, and thought his talents were perfectly suited for that role, but never really got him in anything else I watched. Ill admit, I probably havent seen anything since Mrs. Doubtfire, and I dont think Ive sat through that entire film. However, Im saddened by some of the responses Ive seen to the suicide aspect of his death. Ive seen some uninformed opinions, and some that are just cruel to his friends and loved ones. Its always sad when someone passes, but more so when it could possibly have been prevented. In the past, Ive been the guy that said, How very selfish of that person, without having the dubious benefit of understanding. Unfortunately, Ive lost several friends to suicide, and had close calls with others. It seems that the disease really affects the best and brightest, in my limited sampling. Some of my most talented friends have succumbed to the horrible disease that is Depression. In each case, I would never have thought it possible. Im not really sure what the answer is, but maybe the best we can do is to try not to make depression such a pariah. We need to embrace it as the disease it is, and help those that suffer to realize that there is help available. As for me, Im going to go back and watch those Robin Williams films that I missed, and see if I can find some of the joy that so many of you took away from his performances. Ive surely been wrong about him, and I need to address it. Im also going to make sure that the people that I love know it, and that they fully realize that life without them is not something I want to experience. I suggest we all do the same. Ill start here, if youre on my list of friends, its for a reason, and I love each and every one of you. I dont want to think of not seeing your updates, pictures, or comments.
