I guess Im just a sucker. Every time I see Texas State Universitys football team on TV, I get a little excited - against my better judgement. Its happening again tonight. The Bobcats are on ESPN News, and theyre beating Tulsa 14-3. I just checked out the schools website and I almost decided to sign up again to be a supporting member of the alumni association. I should really know better. That school gave me a bachelors degree back in 1997, when it was still Southwest Texas State University -- Good Ole SWT. By the time I made it back for graduate school in 2001, the administrators had gone completely nuts. They were all about the dog and pony show of becoming a non-directional school and spending millions to rebuild their football stadium. I think about all this every time I make a student loan payment for the Masters Degree I ended up vowing -- for ethical reasons -- to never complete at the school. Its worth remembering my story again tonight. doncudd/2013/01/10/masters/ Yes, the big TV networks give the Bobcats more and more television time each year. But the team is still not overly competitive most seasons. And, more importantly, I guess, no one from the school has ever admitted it was wrong to allow a graduate student just punished for fabricating a class paper to teach a class of undergraduates that, in journalism, liars never get a second chance. Tulsa seems to be coming back. My guess is theyll probably win.
