I guess it is time once again to go over oceangoing/ whale watching apparel. I think I posted something about this 1-2 years ago. For the most part, most repeat clients dress, or have handy, appropriate clothing. First timers on the other hand, dont seem to understand what we are suggesting before they leave or on the telephone. So once more into the breach! (pun) RULE OF THUMB: it can and probably will be up to 20-25 degrees colder on the ocean, dont let the pleasant weather at the dock fool you. 1a. Hats Wear something that will shade you from the sun or cut down glare. A lot of people get by with baseball caps, some need more extensive protection. Wool watch caps are handy since you can pull them down over your ears. There are many people who prefer something like a Tilley hats 1b. A scarf, balaclava, or other facial protection come in handy. I recommend a silk balaclava that can be pulled down around your neck and keeps the wind out off you jacket. 2. Dress in layers, you can always peel something off. A good, insulated jacket over some fleece. Waterproof/windproof ideal. Cashmere and short-sleeved casual wear not recommended. 3. Pants most get by with a pair of heavy jeans. Jeans plus waterproof/windproof outers are best. shorts, beachwear, dresses, or other clothing where the wind might get under are not recommended. 4. Footwear Some people get by with a simple pair of hiking shoes. Some need more protection. Close-toed shoes with non slip soles are preferred. Waterproof best. High heels are a strait up danger on a boat, not recommended. 5. Forgot socks. Wool socks are best, they will still be warm if they are damp. Spring the $$$ for Smart Wool/polypro liners for best results. (actually after my trip to Antarctica, Smart Wool liners are the bomb) The quality and enjoyment of the trip is proportional to your comfort.
