I had a brain storm in my sleep last night, thats when the best ones usually come. Thats also when the most ridiculous ones come. But try this on for size and let me know what you think. You be the judge. I know there are several FB pages from different communities for buy, sell or trade, but this is a little different. Andalusia has some great people with big hearts, and we have a sense of community - well sorta. Youve heard tell, Im sure, even if you dont remember, how large families and groups of friends would gather to help one another when something needed to be done - paint a room, a house, build a barn, plant a garden, gather crops, move, fix a leak, etc. etc. etc. Wouldnt it be wonderful if we started caring and helping our neighbors in the same manner? Gerald Jordan, you were my inspiration for this idea, watching the church go up so quickly that your fellow members are building. Its a wonderful project to watch, to see what a few dedicated individuals can do for someone else - when they work together. There are so many elderly and single parents living here who need just a little help around their house, but just cant afford to hire someone to do it or buy what they need. You could help, and it would cost maybe an hour or two of your time, occasionally, and you would meet friends while helping your community, not to mention how appreciative the recipients would be. For example - a few could gather to screen in a porch for an elderly person so they could sit outside and enjoy the birds without insect bites, or a place where small children could play to free their mom to do other chores close by. Ill bet someone has some old screen laying around not in use, they could donate. If you have things you dont need, give them to someone who can use them, but may not have the money to buy them. Ill bet many have scrap lumber, or materials, appliances, clothing that really would mean the world to someone else, but they just dont have the money to buy them. Rather than letting it ruin or hang in a closet or storage building - give it to someone who needs it, exchange it for something you need they may have. We could post categories such as - Needs, Services Offered, Items for free, Items for trade, or Services for Sale, Items for Sale or some sort. Of course, the site would need to be monitored to make sure no one takes advantage and really are in need. I envision it as being sort of a clearing house for needs in our community. This way, we could get feedback from comments on who to call or trust when we do need to hire someone. If I knew a store or individual had donated goods or services to help their neighbor, I certainly would go to that person or store to do my business, and I think others would feel the same way. Lets keep our business here at home, with our own entrepreneurs. I think this would bring our community together in a special way, that has been lost throughout the years of the Me Me Me generation. To keep it simple - For services, goods and products needed, we could barter, swap goods or labor, or just volunteer to help each other. Or, offer your services at a reasonable rate. What do yall think?
