I had a chance to exercise my White Privilege today. I pulled up into a local retail establishment to make a quick purchase. There was elderly(well, older than I am)Negro gentleman sitting in a Blazer with the hood up and jumper cables stretched out on the ground. Being the astute observer I am, I volunteered my Superior White Guy skills, asking, Do you need a jump? We hooked up the cables and I discovered, because of my Superior White Guy observation skills, that one of the battery terminals was loose. Again, because I am Privileged White Guy who has tools in his tool box, I produced a 5/16 wrench and proceeded to tighten the loose side-mounted cable. Using my Superior White Guy skill of Deduction, I ascertained that the threads on the battery terminal were stripped and the bolt would not tighten. In my most condescending tone, I informed the driver that the threads were stripped and he might need to consider the purchase of a new battery. What really happened was that I helped a man in need.
