I had a chat with a vendor called Allister (aka Sya) from La Brea who was plying his trade in busy downtown Port of Spain. What an education! In addition to the Starch and Calabash mangoes with which I’m somewhat familiar, he taught me about Cutlass mango (shaped like you-know-what) and Bread mango, with which he also made a mean mango chow (more on that later). Check out Allister in the video (ok – so phone footage isn’t my strongest asset…) And I understand from a mango expert whom I saw at the T&T Mango Festival a couple of years ago (it’s usually held in August) that there are about 74 (yes, 74) varieties of mangoes in Trinidad and Tobago. There’s an annual International Mango festival in India, too, that’s probably the biggest!
