I had a client (who was just diagnosed with osteoporosis) come in today saying that her doctor told her to IMMEDIATELY stop all weight training, and start a prescription drug to help with her condition. This client is otherwise healthy and young, in her 50s. This is the exact OPPOSITE of what you should typically do with osteoporosis! Lifting weights is EXTREMELY effective in improving bone density! When you put stress on your skeletal system, through weight training for example, your bones become stronger by absorbing more calcium. Improving bone density key when it comes to osteoporosis. Luckily after sending her several studies on weight training an osteoporosis she became adamant about getting a second opinion! Below is a good article from WebMD on how weight training can improve bone density for anyone who has osteopenia or osteoporosis.
