I had a couple people text me last night and say, hey, when do you go on?. I didnt know what they were talking about. So I got online and saw some big CCM concert thingy. I knew nothing about it. No one asked me to be a part. I guess they thought I died back in 04, or that my contribution wasnt that significant. Either one wouldnt surprise me. In a way both are right. Do I feel hurt? Maybe a little. Im duplicitous to the core. I would not want to do a performance like that, but Im hurt that I wasnt asked. I cant be pleased. But I dont miss all that to be honest with you. Having said that, I am very thankful for the people who gave this little self taught redneck a chance to make records and sing my simple songs. I turned 49 on the 20th. My youngest woke me up at about 3AM and said, pssst..Happy Birthday Daddy, I wanted to be first to say that. He was. Then he wanted to get my phone and look at videos of my late father, his Papa. We watched and cried, and laughed, and cried some more. So many memories flooded my head and leaked out my eyes as I sat in my boys bed, remembering the man who taught me, whipped me when I needed it, loved me, and bought me a guitar when I was 14. One I will share with you was when I was coaxed into entering a talent search. It was one that an Atlanta Christian Radio station put on when I was a senior in high school. Ive never been a fan of talent shows so I entered reluctantly. Surprise of my life I was chosen. They played the winners songs on the radio. My daddy and I got in his red 1972 Ford Pick up and drove around in our yard until we found the station. It was like a dream I never dared dream hearing my song coming through the speakers in that sacred truck. My daddy and I both looked at each other as if wed both seen aliens land in our front yard. He always believed I could do something with my music. He simply never had a doubt. I am thankful for CCM and the people and the artist who have done some good things in so many lives, including mine. So to answer those questions, I was at home helping my baby boy do his homework. As my late mother said, my family was the most important audience I would ever play for.
