I had a freaky thing happen this morning and wanted to pass it - TopicsExpress

I had a freaky thing happen this morning and wanted to pass it along as a warning to others. I received a call from the Fraud Dept. of the Social Security Administration asking me if Id recently submitted an application for my retirement benefits. (WTF?!) After confirming thats exactly who the call was from, I learned that some criminal had my SSN and birthdate and had filed an online application for MY retirement benefits (I became eligible a couple of weeks ago). The SSA flagged it because a lot of the info on the application did not match their records, so they called me. The app listed me as a male for starters. It also directed my benefits to be direct deposited into a bank account in Florida! I am so glad the SSA is looking out for me and that these creeps didnt have much of my personal info. The woman at the SSA said this happens all the time and they flag discrepancies. BTW, she also said most bogus applications come to them from Yahoo e-mail accounts. NOTE: a valid call like this one NEVER asks for your personal information. She merely asked me to confirm or deny the suspected bogus stuff.
