I had a fun little evening adventure at home tonight. I decide to be lazy and place an order online for some pizza delivery through Pizza Hut. A customized Super Supreme and a 2 liter of Pepsi ought to hit the spot. I get a call telling me that my credit card was denied. Im confused cause theres no way my card is invalid or maxed out. I tell them Ill pay cash. I call up the banks 24 hour customer service number and get an automated message, Were upgrading all of our systems. Please call back in 24 hours. Well at least I know why the card was denied. My bank has taken all systems offline and I cant even get a human on the phone let alone make any purchases. What the hell Bank of America?! This is exactly the kind of thing I should be getting notified about in advance. I check my email. No email from BoA. Angry, I decide to go out on my patio and smoke before the pizza gets here. I smoke a couple of cigarettes and its about 15 minutes to delivery time. Time to go back inside. And the patio door wont open. Its a sliding glass door that can only be locked by manually latching the door so now Im back to being confused. Im wearing a t-shirt, boxers, and flip flops. I have no tools, no cell phone, no wallet; only a pack of smokes, an ash tray, and a small TV dinner table upon which the ash tray sits. I try everything at my disposal to get back into my home (short of setting the building on fire and smashing the glass or kicking in my front door) but no joy. A few minutes later, someone walks by so I flag him down and tell him the situation. I ask him to call the apartments emergency line to get someone to let me in. They say its going to be about 45 minutes before they can get here. The delivery guy arrives. The sidewalk is a few feet from my patio so I tell him that I cant take delivery because I cant pay and its going to be another half hour before the maintenance guy gets here to let me in. (I could have accepted delivery if my bank hadnt taken all their systems down!) So he says hell cancel the order and I can call back to have it placed again once Im back inside. Before he leaves, he insists that I take the 2 liter of Pepsi. I tell him I cant because I cant pay for it. He says, No no. You take. You kick back and drink. He hands me the Pepsi and I thank him. I kick back and drink. The maintenance guy arrives a while later. The dead bolt on my front door is locked so he cant just use his master key and walk in the front door. He hops the fence and drills the handle on the sliding door. After he leaves, I can see that the handle is slightly broken. What felt like all the way down on the lever to latch the door is actually not all the way down. It looks like the rotating mechanism might be tilted slightly and is hitting part of the internal handle assembly. This is causing the latch to only move through a partial range of its motion. If you dont move the latch all the way down through its full range of motion, it can re-latch when you close the door. So thats why I was locked out. So big thank you to the pizza hut and maintenance guys! Tomorrow I will be getting either a rebuilt or new handle on my sliding door. Tonight, Im going to be enjoying a 2 liter and pizza which I just reordered.
