I had a great meeting at Furness College yesterday discussing issues regarding young LGBT people, and the setting up of an LGBT youth group with Friends & Supporters of the Furness LGBT Community and Furness College, this has been previously planned, this year however I feel more confident it will come to fruition – if successful both groups will work closely together – our priority is to be there for those young, and possibly vulnerable members of the local LGBT Community By pure coincidence just before, I literally bumped into the person who is prepared to lead our group, so informed them – they responded really positively :D We are toying with the idea of a different display – I suggested no Pride flag as maybe this could be too much for a young person in the closet, and it could put them off visiting our stall. In the past we have had a display with a lot of don’t do this don’t do that regarding homophobic bullying – I suggested a more questioning approach re: our posters “how would you feel if you were picked on and called names, just for being straight” Imagine losing your job cos you were straight, unable to be able to adopt etc. I thought this was a more pro-active approach – and may … just may get the students to think more … I don’t know about anyone else, but I hated being lectured to as a teenager ;) We can but try!
