I had a great visit with Doug Caylor, Jackson, a boxer he used to - TopicsExpress

I had a great visit with Doug Caylor, Jackson, a boxer he used to foster, and the Oberkram family who own him now. Jackson had what their vet thought were seizures a few nights ago, but the symptoms they described to me seemed much more like a heart issue. Luckily an amazing veterinary cardiologist Clay Calvert suggested over 10 years ago I buy my own handheld EKG since I have so many boxers. I put this on Jackson, and it was immediately clear he was having mild tachycardia (an abnormally fast heart rhythm, his was 150 BPM at the time) with VPCs (ventricular premature contrations) every 10 to 20 beats. The fast rhythm and/or a run of the VPCs can cause a dog to collapse. This is very dangerous and the animal can even die. Sudden cardiac death is common with boxers but is easily treated and prevented with Sotalol. Three of my boxers now all have this abnormal rhythm and are on Sotalol: Taylor, Lotty, and Bear. I sent Jackson to our great veterinarian for evaluation and treatment since I just do this for fun and to help the boxers, but am not a vet myself. These are the EKG photos.
