I had a parent, special needs teacher and guidance counsellor - TopicsExpress

I had a parent, special needs teacher and guidance counsellor meeting this morning for master 8. I was going in not knowing what to think of this meeting as last time I seen the guidance councillor for him was about 2 years ago. I knew in my head and heart that master 8 has been progressing in leaps and bounds so I knew it couldnt be too bad, right? Master 8 use to be very withdrawn from his class mates. He would follow the teacher aide around at lunch time or sit in the library by himself. (I was only just made aware of this today). I knew he had problems connecting with people but I didnt realise it was that bad. Im happy to report that he now talks to his whole class, isnt afraid to ask questions and happily plays handball at lunch times with all different groups of peers. I found out today that his progress in his school work this year has been astonishing. His improved more than anyone else at his level originally. Even the special needs teacher is in shock at how much his improved in a short 8 months and his no longer classed as intellectually impaired. However, does still need minimal learning support. His life skills are above average for his age. His reading and writing still needs work but his writing is now legible. As his now not illegible for extra learning with special support next year as his past the fundamental boundary, the choice now lays in our hands if we want him to continue onto the next grade or get him to repeat. I would like to see him stay with his friends in his year level as it took him ages to gain the confidence to build friendships but at the same time I dont want him to go backwards with how much his progressed academically this year already.
