I had a serendipity at Old Ferry Road in Spicewood,Texas today. In addition to the cooperative cactus wren, I observed and photographed two verdins. According to the Texas Audubon Society Austin, Texas Seasonal Distribution Checklist the probability of locating 1-10 verdins in the appropriate habitat (the western portion of the 120 mi. diameter circle surrounding Austin, Texas) is less than 25% from January - mid-March and from mid-October through December. According to the checklist, verdins are rare from mid-March - mid-October (fewer than 5 records on average per season). eBird via Birdlog also states that the verdin is rare at this time of year. A check of the eBird records reveals that verdins were observed two weeks ago on Old Ferry Road and in San Marcos and last week in Reimers Ranch Park. What a summer-no 100-degree days in Austin yet (that I am aware of-95 degrees today was close enough!) and uncommon fall and winter birds in the summertime. Life is good!
