I had a strange encounter last Veterans day. I was in my usual attire (shorts and Hawaiian shirt but no hat or anything of note of my military service) as we went for breakfast at our local popular greasy spoon. We were lucky as there was no line, were seated promptly and had a nice meal. By the time we left there were many people outside sitting on benches waiting to get in. As we walked by the queue I noted at the end a man of my age with a hat that said Vietnam Veteran and had the usual single row of 3 ribbons displayed. I went up to him and said Happy Veterans Day. He was taken slightly aback and finally shook my outreached hand. He then looked into my eyes, saw the look, and asked if I was a Vietnam veteran. I said yes as I studied the details of the pins on his hat noting that he was Air Force. I asked where he served and he told me he was in Germany and Denmark most of this time but had never got to Vietnam. I noticed he was with what appeared to be a grandson. I smiled, thought what a douchebag, but that he was at least honest in his replies, decided not to embarrass him and left it at that . . .
