I had a surprise social encounter a few days on my way into our local Fred Meyer to deposit a check at our branch credit union. As I approached the automatic doors a black guy was walking out with his purchases in a bag in one hand and carrying a new snow shovel in the other. Something he was carrying immediately triggered the shoplifting alarm and he stopped immediately at the threshold, completely surprised. Lots of us have had this happen to us as the cashier forgot to deactivate the anti-shoplifting strip on some purchase we made. The look of surprise on his face and his immediate halt in the doorway to look at the stuff he bought was the best indicator that he was an honest customer. But right behind him comes a guy, maybe 65-70, pointing a finger at the black man and declares You need to pay for this stuff. This all happened in a blink of an eye but I had just enough time as I was walking past this event to immediately get into that old guys face a second after he basically called the black guy a thief, and told him in no uncertain terms HE DID PAY FOR THEM. IF HE HADNT PAID FOR THEM HE WOULD HAVE JUST KEPT WALKING OUT THE DOOR. The poor guy who had to put up with this cranky old white hater appreciated my comment as he headed to Customer Service with his purchases and I parted ways with him to the bank. See, we CAN be just as assertive in real life and stand up for justice as we are on FB. And we should be.
