I had a thought tonight on my ride home that may need to be considered by all of us who call ourselves American... about recent events in the news. In the media, and in our society, weve let ourselves secretly become comfortable with labeling people as something Other-American. African American Asian American etc etc Isnt it a bit harmful to label someone as an outsider like this? If you are born in America, doesnt that make you an American who should be treated FAIRLY in the eyes of the law no matter what you look like? Isnt it time that we stop talking about what race a person is, what racial profile the neighborhood they come from, and instead talk about how these American citizens arent being treated as Americans should be treated by their own government or officers of the law? Is it time to stop labeling people to be politically correct, and instead work on making the politics around us all correct? Isnt it time to stop worrying about our words being offensive, and instead worry about how offensive it is that we allow any of our citizens to be killed by police officers with no justice? Black, White, Brown...who cares? Eric Garner was an American citizen who was killed for no good reason. He was as American as anyone else, no matter what neighborhood in this country they come from. Shouldnt it bother us all that the officer that did this got off the hook, no matter what we choose to call ourselves? A man died. Not a racial profile, and not an outsider. An American citizen was killed by the police. It was caught on tape. The officer that killed him got away with no punishment. None. If youre an American, why arent you mad as Hell? #icantbreathe
