I had a very dear friend who died at about 38 from sickle cell, - TopicsExpress

I had a very dear friend who died at about 38 from sickle cell, she died in extreme pain and I could not help wondering if life was also like that for people like her in other parts of the world where the condition challenges; I have a niece who has an autistic daughter in Florida. Though the condition is severe, obviously the poor girl is being gradually helped back into mainstream clinically and educationally. I did wonder, thankfully, what would have happened to her if they lived here in my country. My brother passed away in London hospital after being left open for about a whole year post-complicated surgery, but no member of the family raised any questions about the quality of medical assistance he got. Friends assured us he would have died even before the first surgery. I think he had a total of four at different times. The Kanu Heart Foundation reported being a part of a research some time back that discovered that more Nigerian children are being born and lost to heart diseases. The few who survive are usually the ones whose parents could afford the Indian treatment or got help from organizations like Kanu Heart Foundation. Again I could not help wondering how much research is going on to find out what is responsible for the increase in heart conditions among children and what we are doing to help the loss of so many young promises. I have had to keep reminding myself that we are not Sudan...54 years after we became free of long-distance decision making from Great Britain, we still do not have facilities to deal with challenges such as these. Please do not remind me of how many experts we have in those fields for the best of them have fled. Do not show me the way to an excellent private medical facility either, you know my neighbor cannot afford it. If Lagos State has something to point at at Ayinke House [LASUTH and Gbagada GH], can it attend to the whole country if other states and the Federal Government are not building theirs? Please do not bother to answer, just VOTE RIGHT for whoever will ensure that our children do not keep dying while they fly from FCT to Nyanyan by chopper! Most politicians are cut off from reality. Bring them down hard with your vote. Vote without sentiment, Vote selfishly!! Happy Sunday!
