I had a very good year as a glider in 1973 ,a disappointing first year with rotation in 1974(torn cartilage) and a special year in 1975. It was back to the ranch so to speak , I had left a lot of distance out there between my warm ups and my meet throws and I always chased my warm ups into the next season. In 1973 I had warm ups (fouls) of 74 but could only manage 694 in a meet. I blamed it on the torn cartilage . I had always used the J factor or plyometric right leg to redirect my bodyweight and set up my vertical or lift phase. When I could get enough force vertically to match my horizontal drive I could stay in the circle. It was like returning to the center of the earth ( what goes up must come down) sometimes on the toeboard. Any way , this combination of drive & lift seemed easy in warm ups now over 80 avoiding the toe board. I also received a second invitation to participate in the Super Stars. My first invite ended as part of the nightmare of 1974 season , a poor showing. This was added motivation to run, lift , swim and throw. I was looking forward to the hard work ahead , how often do you get a second chance at something, I was very healthy and my bio -rhythms were hitting on all cylinders . I took my bike everywhere ; swimming first thing in the morning , then throwing , weight lifting & lunch . Hitting baseballs or golf in the afternoon and sprinting before dinner and 1000 yards in the pool. I was playing tennis under the lights and sleeping real good at night. The swimming was like massage and I believe loosened my shoulder coupled with 5 sets of 20 in the chin up department and overhead presses / jerks (olympic style). I was able throw light shots very far (100) feet + with 8 pounds. I never rushed any variable in training always taking my time & avoiding injuries. Hows that for off season training ???
