I had a very powerful moment with my five-year old last night. - TopicsExpress

I had a very powerful moment with my five-year old last night. James was extremely sad that his grandparents were returning to their home. His initial coping mechanism was to escape into a closet and hide his tears from us. I eventually pursued him and held him in a firm embrace. We shared a moment of raw vulnerability and sadness that is hard to capture in words. I told him it was ok to cry. I assured him boys are allowed to suffer and mourn. Our tears, I told my son, are reminders that God cries too... How is faith to endure, O God, when you allow all this scraping and tearing on us? You have allowed rivers of blood to flow, mountains of suffering to pile up, sobs to become humanitys song--all without lifting a finger that we could see. You have allowed bonds of love beyond number to be painfully snapped. If you have not abandoned us, explain yourself. We strain to hear. But instead of hearing an answer we catch sight of God himself scraped and torn. Through our tears we see the tears of God.” ― Nicholas Wolterstorff, Lament for a Son
