I had a voicemail from a constituent this afternoon who received a notice from DPW that she needed to buy a proper container for her garbage (no lid, can oversized) or she would face a fine. When I called the constituent back 2 minutes later, she indicated to me that it was wrong for the City to enforce a law that wasnt previously enforced on her. I indicated to her that I might be able to get her an extension of time to comply with the warning due to the holidays (Jan 9th instead of Dec 26th), and that she might be able to ask DPW for a reduced price if there is a financial hardship. She said you arent helping me and she hung up. Awhile later I called her back and confirmed in a voicemail that I was able to get her a timeline extension of Jan 9th due to the holidays, DPW may be able to work on her with the price, and where she can find the municipal code online to find more info. I also indicated that, while I wish I could help further, I simply cant overrule the law on the size of the can. I then wished her a Merry Christmas and asked her to feel free to call again with any questions/comments. I just got a call saying I am of no help, that I am wrong to insinuate she wanted me to break the law, it is wrong for the City to enforce a law that wasnt previously enforced on her, and that she will be heard at the next Council meeting. *sigh* Sometimes trying to do the right thing bites you in butt...
