I had a wish unexpectedly fulfilled today: I got to meet several of the people involved with the Lutheran comfort dogs today. The gentleman on the right lives in Newtown Connecticut. He works for NBC and is a public affairs officer forThe National Guard in Connecticut and the oldest Calvary detachment in the country. He and the Lutheran comfort dogs permanently stationed there have been instrumental in the ongoing recovery of the students and families affected by the Sandy Hook Connecticut shooting. There were a few tears shed over coffee as he told, beautifully, some of the stories of recovery and community cohesion. The Hartmans, on the left, do training for the comfort dogs and are advocates for legislative change regarding assistance dogs in Illinois. We only live about 10 miles from each other but hadnt connected up to now. And as fate would have it theyre both black belts in tae kwon do and their daughter is a budding champion archer. Ken Fay, from Connecticut, is also an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker who before this had never been to Chicago. He wanted to see Lake Michigan on what may be one of the roughest and coldest lakeshore days Ive ever known. The temperature is a balmy 27° but the fierce winds numbed our faces long before we got down to the water. Its hard to see in the background but the ice on the shoreline is already about 3 feet high. I feel very privileged to have met these folks today.
