I had a wonderful day on the Navajo reservation today, and covered - TopicsExpress

I had a wonderful day on the Navajo reservation today, and covered 500 miles to boot. What a beautiful place, especially the Canyon de Chelly, near Chinle, AZ. This was where Kit Carson, leading U.S. troops in the mid 1860s, destroyed the peoples means of subsistence - their crops, livestock, and peach orchards - so the Navajo could be forced into exile for several years in a desolate place 300 miles from their homeland. After suffering immeasurable hardship, the Navajo were allowed to return home in 1868 and today have a reservation the size of Massachusetts. The Navajo people I encountered - particularly the young family that pulled my truck from the mud and snow it was stuck in on a remote dirt road (my misadventure of the day) - were friendly and gracious. Someday Ill come for a much longer visit. But tonight Im in Santa Fe, near the ancient town plaza, getting ready to explore more of New Mexico tomorrow. And speaking of stopping over in Santa Fe....
