I had a wonderful reunion with Elsa yesterday which so filled my heart with joy. This is why we do what we do. Elsa was found in Myakka State Park a cold, hungry and wet dog 5 years ago by a couple of caring young women who had to hide her until they could find someplace she could go and not be euthanized. You see, Elsa suffered from Separation Anxiety - she would totally destroy a place in 5 minutes when left alone. She broke out of crates - out of rooms and out of houses too. Her case was severe. She was adopted out 5 times to people who said they knew how to work with her - Elsa was also returned 5 times as well, with a broken heart which worsened her separation anxiety. We are not going to give up! She filled our shelter with joy, love and her funny antics, so we were determined to find her the right home, no matter how long it took. So many and I mean many people came to adopt her and I would always ask if they were willing to donate their couch to save her? They would always say NO! Then this is not the dog for you - Elsa needs someone who will work with her and not give up on her - to help her understand she will never be abandoned again......One day, two years ago, Lisa called and she was looking for a dog that was sweet, friendly that she could take to work with her. Elsa would comfort people with Alzheimer disease. My mind was turning - this just might be perfect for Elsa. Lisa is smart, compassionate and dedicated. The more we talked I knew this was a perfect match and so did Lisa. The day came when Elsa went for a visit and then we decided Lisa would foster her while we worked together to teach Elsa how to climb stairs - not run out the door - not to go into resident rooms - not fear the wheel chairs or canes - not steal food - ride an elevator etc. This was a lot of work! Lisa was a natural and Elsa was a hit with the residents. She bonded to Lisa and mastered whatever task we gave her. Finally Elsa has achieved her dream! She was adopted! After 2 years in a stable environment there is no more separation anxiety. Elsa is a calm, sweet, loving, relaxed dog without a worry in the world ♥ you go Elsa - enjoy ♥ Thank you Lisa for believing in Elsa and seeing what we saw - a dog with heart of gold and a crafty mind - life is just the way it should be, for Elsa, full of love, understanding, training and commitment ♥
