I had an awesome time today learning and hiking the battlefield and the surrounding areas of Gettysburg! I think we ended up walking 17+ miles on the day. Our first stop was at the Museum where we watched a film, explored the exhibits, and saw the amazing Cyclorama painting! From there we went and had a good lunch before we made way to the battlefield. From 1:30pm-6:00pm we stopped only to examine the monuments and landmarks with only one water break. In that time we hiked up and down the mountains from cemetery ridge and little round top, where the Union held the high ground, the whole way around by the wheat fields and peach orchard, to the confederate side where Pickett and his army prepared for the mile March straight towards the union in an open battlefield. After pondering where to go next we decided to take our final hike of the day as Pickett and his 1st Virginia regiment did on the mile hike straight through the open battlefield. It was a day of learning, fun, and exercise to say the least. After a day of visiting and walking, just about everywhere a battle took place, we headed back to the town. We explored many shops and learned a little about how to smoke a pipe from the sweetest little old lady. Then to finish off the night we took a haunted tour around the town before saying goodbye to a peaceful, quiet, erie, beautiful little city.
