I had an interesting situation the other day that made me stop and reflect on how much I have to be thankful for. I ran into Jewel to pick up some things for dinner. I found the shortest line and got behind a mother and daughter who looked to be about 4. The cashier was in the processing of ringing them out and as I put my items on the belt, noticed she had swiped her card a couple times but it was denied. Thought to myself, “great going to be here forever now while she argues the card should work and has plenty of money in her account.” On her third swipe I noticed it was a Link card. That got my attention. Why? When I took a closer look she wasn’t the usually Link card holder I see. This woman didn’t have the newest cell phone – I didn’t even see one. She didn’t have a high end logoed purse – I saw no purse. She nor her daughter had on brand name clothes. She was trying to buy a gallon of Milk, Bread, lunch meat, and trail mix – not ice cream, candy, sweets, or any junk food. The cashier was amazing and asked for the card. He tried to run it at his terminal, even taking the time to manually type in the numbers. After the 5th decline, he was very apologetic and said it was not going through. At this point you could she was disappointed and a little embarrassed. She was preparing to leave and I honestly was ready to let her go but…. the little girl who was sitting so patently in the cart, holding some stuffed animal of sorts, looked at her and said, “can we go now, I am so hungry.” All I could think of was this innocent girl not understanding why her mom had to leave the store without their food. I don’t know this woman’s story or what road she took that lead her to the point in her life she was at now, I just couldn’t watch her leave. Her bill was all of $12 and some change. I handed the cashier a 20 and said I would take care of it. The woman looked and said thank you. It was by far the most sincere thank you I think I have ever received. They left, the little girl waved and we all went about or night. I thought about my three year old going into the fridge any time and having something to eat. Not having to worry about a roof over my head, shoes on my feet, and food on the table. It was a reality check of sorts which made me stop and be thankful for all I have.
