I had an interesting talk with a fella who was born in Soviet controlled Poland and moved to Canada at age 7. We were talking about what is happening in the Ukraine. His comparison was to Canada and Quebec. What if they separated after a referendum? You would have those that want to be a separate country and those that want to remain Canadian. If this happened (we saw the FLQ crisis years ago) and Stephen Harper used the army to control the uprising ( Pierre Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act), would other countries invoke economic sanctions? Would the US threaten to use military force to help the Quebecois maintain their new sovereign country? I found it an interesting analogy and one that is not that far fetched. Quebec is headed into a Spring election and if the Partis Quebecois are successful, they might have another referendum to separate. Food for thought on a boring Thursday in a much too long winter 2014!
