I had an unusual experience today on my deck in Rutherford NJ. It has been frigid cold here the last couple of days and we had a light snow this morning. I went out around 8 am to throw some seed on the deck and I noticed a white throated sparrow on the deck. Normally theyre very skittish and fly off but this one just hopped away a couple of feet. A few minutes later I went out to fill the feeder in the backyard and again this sparrow was there, not moving much. I began to be concerned for it. This young bird was sitting in the snow just a couple of feet from the door staring at me. It seemed very weak and cold. Notice the snow on its wings. I didnt want to stress it out but the bird seemed incapabable of scratching the snow for seed that was there. I opened the door slightly and threw some seed literally in front of the bird. It didnt move and it started to eat slowly. I kept checking it during the day. It hung around the back door as you can see from the tracks in the snow. I put out more seed. By the afternoon, the sun had come out to warm up things a bit, though the tempurarute still below freezing. The bird seemed better. Notice it is standing up more erect and it started to flicked its tail feathers a bit. Finally I came out and it was gone. I saw no signs that it had come to any bad end. I try not to anthropomorphize what birds do, but it really seems like this little sparrow came to me for help. I knew it needed energy and made food easy for it to find, and it seemed to help. Sometimes what we do for these little creatures can help.
