I had asked for one of my patients with SMA Type 2 to get an Arterial blood gas (ABG) done close by to Whitefield instead of coming all the way to my clinic in a wheelchair. She calls me after two days to tell me the report and says she was charged Rs.5500/- for it. I was shocked! How can any lab charge Rs.5500/- for an ABG? I ask her where she went and she says Narayana Hrudayalaya, Whitefield as thats the closest to her. With my anti-corporate mentality I expected this to be a tough fight. I had to fight for my patient though she had no clue she had overpayed. I called the NH Lab and they gave me the number of the doctor incharge of labs. I messaged her how appalled I was and how she needs to give an explanation as to why this had happened. What surprised me was how co-operative she was and how she understood it was unfair to the patient. She understood that the billing section had not done the right thing. She asked me for a few hours time. She bombarded her management and made sure the billing personnel understood their mistake for overcharging the patient. She called my patient, apologised and ensured that Rs.5000/- was refunded! I should appreciate her and the management for responding so promptly. Fight for your patients rights if you think it has been compromised. As primary doctors, its our duty!
